Power-law correlations in the southern-oscillation-index fluctuations characterizing El Niño.
The southern oscillation index (SOI) is a characteristic of the El Niño phenomenon. SOI monthly averaged data is analyzed for the time interval 1866-2000. The tail of the cumulative distribution of the fluctuations of SOI signal is studied in order to characterize the amplitude scaling of the fluctuations and the occurrence of extreme events. Large fluctuations are more likely to occur than the...
Asymmetry in power-law magnitude correlations.
Time series of increments can be created in a number of different ways from a variety of physical phenomena. For example, in the phenomenon of volatility clustering-well-known in finance-magnitudes of adjacent increments are correlated. Moreover, in some time series, magnitude correlations display asymmetry with respect to an increment's sign: the magnitude of |x_{i}| depends on the sign of the...

Introduction Awide variety of natural phenomena is characterized by power law behavior of their parameters. This type of behavior is also called scaling. The first observation of scaling probably goes back to Kepler who empirically discovered that squares of the periods of planet revolution around the Sun scale as cubes of their orbits radii. This empirical law allowed Newton to discover his fa...

High frequency intrinsic modes in El Niño/ Southern Oscillation Index
Recent daily data of the Southern Oscillation Index have been analyzed. The power spectrum indicates major intrinsic geophysical short periods. We find interesting “high frequency” oscillations at 24, 27, 37, 76, 100 and 365 days. In particular the 24 days peaks may correspond to the Branstator-Kushnir wave, the 27 days may be due to the moon effect rotation, the 37 days peaks is most probably ...
